Floresta Laurissilva
Occupying around 1500 hectares (20% of the Island total surface), on the hills facing North, Laurissilva Forest is the remaining primitive forest in Madeira and it only survives in the Atlantic archipelagos or the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Dating back to the Tertiary Period, it’s a humid subtropical forest and it is Unesco World Natural Heritage since 1999.
